The majority of the country has high elevation, with the principal mountains are concentrated in the west, with much of this region having elevations above 2,000 meters and the country's highest peaks permanently snow-capped land covered with glaciers. Mountains make up 42 percent of the territory. The largest Mongolian mountain range, the Altai Mountains, is located in the western part of the country. This range of mountains stretches for 1500 km.
